Unless a very dangerous, last ditch operation on the high seas succeeds, the ship will run aground on the sandy coast between Monday night and Tuesday night.
The Vice-Admiral Emmanuel De Oliveira of France's Atlantic Maritime Prefecture said "We will do everything within our power to succeed".
Like something out of a Hollywood movie, the rescue mission involves stormy weather, helicopter rescues and a runaway ship heading for a national park and a scenic seaside resort.
The saga began on January 26th when the Modern Express, a 163-metre Panamanian flagged freighter travelling from Gabon to the French port of Le Havre began listing severely to one side.
